In Greek mythology the newly deceased has to cross the river Styx an Archeron to reach the world of the dead. A coin needs to be paid to Charon for passage as he is the ferryman for Hades, the ruler of the underworld, this is why a coin is often placed in or on the mouth of the deceased during this time period, the dead is left to wander the shores of the underworld for hundreds of years if he or she cannot pay the fee.
